Bradley International Airport (BDL) in Windsor Locks, Connecticut, north of Hartford, is the second-busiest airport in New England. It comes up often when a fare out of Hartford is cheaper, a nonstop is only offered from there, or a traveler lives in the Danbury or northern Dutchess corridor and wants to avoid New York City traffic altogether. The question we hear most is simple: is Bradley actually closer?
We measured the road distance and normal-traffic drive time from each of the 282 towns Ernie's Taxi serves to Bradley, JFK, LaGuardia, Newark and Westchester County Airport (HPN). The honest answer: Bradley is a quicker drive than JFK from 29 of those towns, all in northern Fairfield County, CT and Dutchess County, NY, and quicker than all three New York City airports from 15. From every town in Westchester, Putnam, Orange, Rockland and Ulster, JFK, LaGuardia or Newark is the shorter trip, and Westchester County Airport (HPN) is closer than Bradley from every one of the 282 towns.
Which towns are closer to Bradley Airport than to JFK?
The pattern follows I-84. Towns on or near it in Connecticut, from Danbury east to Newtown and Southbury, and the northern Dutchess towns that reach I-84 quickly, are the ones where Hartford comes out ahead of Queens. Times below are ranges: the low end is a quiet mid-day drive, the high end ordinary weekday traffic. The JFK and LaGuardia runs are the ones most exposed to rush hour, so add 20–30 minutes to those at peak times.

When Bradley is the long way round
From Westchester and Putnam, Bradley is a long ride. From Mount Kisco it is about 2 hr 10 min (96 miles); Yorktown Heights it is about 2 hr 15 min (98 miles); Brewster it is about 1 hr 50 min (82 miles); White Plains it is about 2 hr 20 min (106 miles); Carmel it is about 1 hr 55 min (87 miles). Westchester County Airport (HPN) is under an hour from all of those towns, and LaGuardia is usually closer than Bradley too. It is still worth the drive when the fare difference is large, when a nonstop you need only flies from Hartford, or when you are flying home from New England anyway. We drive to Bradley from anywhere we serve.
Bradley vs HPN, JFK and LaGuardia: how to decide
- Check HPN first. Westchester County Airport is the closest airport for every town in this guide. If your airline flies the route from HPN, it almost always wins on total travel time.
- Compare the whole trip, not the fare alone. A cheaper ticket out of Bradley can disappear into a two-hour ride each way from southern Westchester. From the Danbury area or northern Dutchess, the ride is closer to the JFK run, and a smaller terminal means a shorter walk and quicker security.
- International flights usually still mean JFK or Newark. See our airport drive-time guide for those runs town by town, and our Stewart Airport comparison if you live west of the Hudson or in Dutchess.
- Weather. The I-84 corridor east of Waterbury gets more snow than the Hutchinson or the Van Wyck. On winter mornings we build extra time into Bradley pickups.
